Adding a Newsgroup

To add newsgroups to your NewsHunter document, the News Group Manager window is used. To add a newsgroup follow the procedure below.

Procedure 11 - Adding a Newsgroup

• Click the Add... button in the Newsgroups section of your NewsHunter Document.

• The Newsgroup Manager opens.

The Newsgroup Manager allows you to add newsgroups, search for newsgroups, build the list of newsgroups, and update the list of newsgroups. The first time you access the Newsgroup Manager for a newly added server, the list of newsgroups will be empty and you will not be able to search for newsgroups. However, you can still add newsgroups manually if you know the name of the newsgroup you want to scan.

Tip 7 - Searching for Newsgroups

Before you can search for newsgroups, you have to build the list of newsgroups. Open the Newsgroup Manager and click on the Build Newsgroup List button. Once the list of newsgroups has been downloaded from your news server to your NewsHunter folder, the search function will be enabled.

• Enter the name of the newsgroup you want to add into the "Name" field.
• Click the Add button.
• The Newsgroup Manager stays open until you click the Done button.
• When you are done adding newsgroups, click the Done button.
• The newsgroups will be added to your NewsHunter document.

Searching For Newsgroups

The Newsgroup Manager also allows you to search for newsgroups if you have downloaded to the list of newsgroups from the news server. To download the list of newsgroups, click on the Build Newsgroup List button.

Once the list of newsgroups has been built, follow the procedure below to search for groups in which you are interested.

Procedure 12 - Searching for Newsgroups

• Open a NewsHunter document.
• Click the Add button.
• The Newsgroup Manager opens.
• Enter the word or phrase you want to search for into the Search for Newsgroup field.
• Click the Search button.
• Any newsgroups that contain the word or phrase are placed in the listbox.
• To subscribe to or unsubscribe from a newsgroup double-click the line in which it appears.

• The Newsgroup Manager remains open until you click the Done button. This allows you to add or search for as many newsgroups as you like.
• When you are done adding newsgroups, click the Done button.
• Your NewsHunter document reflects any additions or removals you have made to the list of newsgroups.

Tip 12 - Adding a Newsgroup - Advanced Method

Sometimes when you enter a newsgroup for the first time or when you haven't downloaded from a newsgroup in a while you may notice that NewsHunter seems to hang when attempting to download. To avoid this, the following technique has been suggested by several users:

• Add the newsgroup.
• Click the Start button.
• As soon as you see the Last article field in the newsgroup list update, click the Stop button.
• Select the newsgroup.
• Select Set Starting Point... from the More Newsgroup Commands menu.
• Add 100 or 200 to the Last Article Examined.
• Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
• Click the OK button to close the alert box.
• Click the Start button.

NOTE: Depending on the number of articles in the newsgroup you may want to set the starting point even further along than just100 or 200 articles.

If this techniue is followed, you will find that your initial download from a newsgroup proceeds more smoothly.
