Newshunter Document Window

The Newshunter Document window is the main window you will use. The screen shot below shows what a typical Newshunter document looks like. As you can see, controls are grouped into areas of functionality. At the very top are controls to start and stop downloading as well as status information. Below these are controls to set document level options, controls to handle articles, newsgroups, and news servers. There is also an area with additional feedback.

Below the control buttons is the list of newsgroups, the list of articles currently being processed, and the image preview section. You are free to size your Newshunter documents to show as much or as little information as you like.

  1. The Start button will begin downloading.
  2. The Stop button will stop downloading.
  3. The Up/Down button controls how often the status line is updated.
  4. The Progress bar displays the progress through the list of articles currently being processed.
  5. The number next to the progress bar displays the current article being examined.
  6. The Status bar displays information such as how much data has been downloaded, command status, news server responses, and other information.

Tip 5 - Make Newshunter Document Small

Notice in the screen shot above that your Newshunter documents can be resized to a very small size while still providing access to essential controls and feedback. You can have several Newshunter documents running and keep tabs on how each is running without having to switch through a bunch of windows.

Document

  1. Options. Clicking on the Options... button will open a window where you can adjust the number of headers to download, how many files to downloading before switching newsgroups as well as other document level functions.

Articles

  1. The Skip button will skip the current file being downloaded and move to the next article in the list.
  2. The Filter button will create a filter that ignores all future posts from the author who posted the image currently displayed by the Image Preview.
  3. The Delete button will delete the file displayed in the Image Preview.
  4. The Viewer button lets you turn the Image Viewer on or off.
  5. The Up/Down button lets you adjust the row height of the Articles list.
  6. The current article being processed is displayed next to the Up/Down button.

News Groups

The News Groups section provides access to commands that manage news groups.

  1. The News Group Commands menu has commands that let you alter the starting point of the selected newsgroup. This lets you move back and forth through the news group to skip over or re-scan articles.
  2. The Add button opens the News Group Manager window where you can add news groups to your Newshunter document, search for news groups, build the list of news groups, and update te list of news groups.
  3. The Delete button deletes the selected news groups.
  4. The Up button moves the selected news group up one line in the list. You can use the Up and Down buttons to place the news groups in the order you want them to be scanned.
  5. The Down button moves the news group down one line. You can use the Up and Down buttons to place the news groups in the order you want them to be scanned.
  6. The On/Off button menu will turn the select news groups on or off. When a news group is off it will not be scanned by your Newshunter document.

News Servers

This section provides access to commands used to manage your news servers. When you select a news server from the menu, the news group list will be updated to reflect the newsgroups you have subscribed to for the selected news server. You can also edit the news server information or even delete the news server from the database.

  1. The News Server menu. This menu contains a list of all the news servers you have added to the database. To add a new news server, click the menu and select the New... command.
  2. The Edit button lets you edit news server information such as you user name and password. You can also delete the news server.


Tip 6 - Deleting a News Server

When you delete a news server, you will also delete all the news groups associated with the news server. The deleted news groups will also be deleted from any Newshunter document that refered to them.


Feedback

The Feeback section provides you with information about what your Newshunter document is doing.

  1. Number of articles downloaded from the current news group,
  2. Total number of files download
  3. Total megabytes downloaded
  4. Status information for the article currently being examined.

The News Group List

Below the control section is the news group list. You can turn a news group on or off by double-clicking the appropriate line.

The Articles List

Below the news group list is the Articles list. This list displays the current batch of articles being processed. By clicking the Options... button, you can adjust how many headers are downloaded at a time from 10 all that way up to 5,000. The fist column of the articles list displays the status of the article.

The Summary Information Section

Below the articles list is the summary information. This displays important information concerning the file that was just downloaded. It is also used to deliver verbose information about the activity of your Newshunter document.

The Image Preview Section

The lower right-hand corner of your Newshunter document is the Image Preview section. This is where you will see the images that have been downloaded. The image preview section will also display icons when certain actions have been completed. For example, when you click the Delete button the image preview replaces the deleted image with a trash can icon. The name of the file is displayed just above the image.
