Downloading Articles

Downloading a few articles, a whole bunch of articles, or an entire newsgroup is easy to do with NewsHunter3. Unlike reading a newsgroup where you read each article and decode any attachments one by one, downloading a newsgroup lets you automatically download articles. All articles are downloaded to a spool folder.

Step 1: Selecting a Download Style
On each newsreader, you will see a Download Style displayed. Click on it to change the download style. You can also use the Download Style menu to select a style.

Download Group for Offline Reading
For example, if you wanted to download the whole newsgroup for offline reading, you would select "Download Group for Offline Reading." This will download all the articles but will not mark them read.

Download Queued Articles
If you have queued some articles and want to download them, you would click until you see the "Download Queued Articles."

Download All Articles
If you wanted to download all the articles in a group you would select "Download All Articles". NewsHunter3 will then download all the articles in the group and mark them as read.

Step 2 - Narrow the Number of Articles to be Downloaded
Search String Can Be Applied
- In each instance, you can also use the search string field to further refine which articles will be downloaded. For example, if you only want to download queued articles with "C82", you would use the search string to narrow the queue. In fact, the Search String field will always be applied to whatever NewsHunter3 downloads. This is because NewsHunter3 only looks at what is displayed in the article list. If it is not in the article list, it will not get downloaded. So, if you have the "Download All Articles" style selected, if you have a search string applied, NewsHunter3 will download all articles that match the search string.

Step 3 - Click the Go Button
Once you have finished deciding which articles to download, make sure you are connected, and click on the "Go" button. NewsHunter3 will begin downloading articles to the spool folder. If you have automatic decoding enabled (see the Decode Attachments screen shot above), NewsHunter3 will decode the file if possible.

Step 4 (Optional) - Close the Newsreader Window
Once you have started downloading articles, you can go ahead and close the newsreader window. You will still be able to monitor what is happening from the Server List window. You can re-open the newsreader at any time. Decoded files will continue to be displayed in the Picture Viewer if appropriate.

Step 5 - yEnc files and multipart yEnc Files
All yEnc files on usenet must have "yEnc" in the subject line. If NewsHunter encounters a yEnc file it will be decoded. If a multipart yEnc file is encountered, NewsHunter will keep trying to decode the file. If NewsHunter3 gets all the parts it will decode and assemble the yEnc file for you. Please remember that many people will yEnc a file and then use another program to segment it. NewsHunter3 will not process a segmented file.

Step 6 - Processing Segmented Files
Segmented files end with number like ".001", ".002", etc. NewsHunter3 will download and decode segmented files but will not process them any further. To finish up, you can use a program like Split&Concat to stitch to segments back together.
