NewsHunter QuickStart Instructions

To quickly begin using NewsHunter, simply follow the instructions below. You will need the following pieces of information:

  • Your news server address. This is usually something like "news.mindspring.com"
  • Your news server user name.
  • Your news server password.

Procedure 1 - QuickStart for NewsHunter

  • Launch NewsHunter.
  • Select File -> New.
  • A new NewsHunter document is created. If you have not defined any news servers, a dialog box will open asking you to provide the needed information to access your news server.
  • Once you have entered your news server information, you will need to add a news group to the list.
  • Click the Add.. button under the News Groups section.

After clicking the Add... button, the Newsgroup Manager window will open.

Enter the name of a news group into the name field.

  • Click the Add button.
  • Click the Done button.

The newsgroup has been added to your NewsHunter document.

  • Click the Options button under the Document section.

  •  From the "Get this many headers" menu select "100 headers".
  • Close the Options Window.

You NewsHunter document will now request 100 headers at a time from the news server instead of 75.

  • Save your NewsHunter document.
  • Click the Start button.

Your NewsHunter document begins downloading. If this is the first time you have downloaded files from the news group, it may take a short time before NewsHunter goes through old, expired articles that are no longer available on your news server. The reason this may happen depends on how your ISP or News Provider has configured their news server. Some news servers will retain headers for articles even though they have expired. You can tell this by looking at the Status Line.: it will display "423 - No Such Article in Group" until your NewsHunter document reaches the first available article.

Once your NewsHunter document encounters some available articles, it will begin downloading them.
